A Few Updates from the Last Week or So

10/28/2024

Here’s the latest assortment of things on my mind, in no particular order.

Sound Horizon’s 20th Major Debut Anniversary!!

Sound Horizon is over 20 years old now, and yeah, I know I say this constantly, but Sanhora really does mean a lot to me. My first album was Elysion, and I’ll never forget hearing Ark for the first time. I had no idea what I was getting into, but I fell in love instantly. No other music does it quite like this, and it’s still my favorite for a reason.

Revo’s work has completely reshaped how I think about art and storytelling. So here’s to 20+ years of Sanhora, to Revo doing what he does best, and to me probably talking about it for another 20.

Guilty Gear Strive Has Missed So Many Times It’s Just Sad Now

I don’t feel like elaborating, but Guilty Gear fans have some of the worst music takes, and Dizzy’s Strive theme is actually just bad. If you think the “Awe of She” riff is a “genius leitmotif,” I can’t help you. I’ve spent enough time defending “Perfection Can’t Please Me,” but I can’t do it anymore. There’s no heart in this stuff these days. Anyway…

The Yankees Are Falling Apart, and I’m Trying Not to Care (But I Kind of Do)

A lot of people talk about the Yankees being bad this year, but like, it’s more complicated than that. I genuinely don’t care that much; baseball fandom always feels like low-stakes loyalty for me, but it’s still kind of sad. Especially because I do love this team (Cole and Volpe… heart emoji) and I feel like they really do deserve a World Series, but Boone is out there making baffling calls and just generally acting like he’s never seen a dugout in his life. It’s almost like watching a slow-motion car crash, except the car is loaded with players I irrationally care about, and the driver’s too oblivious to hit the brakes.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers just seem kind of unstoppable. It’s one of those things that’s equal parts inspiring and depressing, especially when I look at the Yankees scrambling to even stay in the game. But anyway, I’ve been watching with my partner, and the bolillo-bread hotdogs we made are definitely the highlight. I keep saying “next game, next game,” which I realize is an absolutely delusional baseball fan cliché, but it's fine!

Lost My Crown Mid-Bite :(

After 13 loyal years, my stainless steel crown finally gave out, and in the most undignified way possible. It happened while I was eating mac and cheese pizza (a craving I’d been building up for weeks) and right when I got to the best part of the slice, out it went. Now I’m stuck with a temporary crown, waiting for the permanent replacement, which is both annoyinh and expensive (thank you, dental system).

And that’s where I’m at—still rooting for the Yankees, still listening to Sanhora, and just hoping to chew on the right side again soon.
